Wooden Rafter Tails are an excellent addition to the outside of the home and are also used in large commercial projects to add architectural interest and detail. These handcrafted pieces also look great in free-standing structures such as gazebos and pergolas and are a perfect way to dress up porches and entrances. Rafter tails are the decorative ends of roof rafters that extend beyond the wall under the eaves — and even when your real rafters are hidden, adding cedar rafter tails recreates that handcrafted, exposed-beam look along the roofline. They are a signature detail of craftsman, bungalow, and Spanish-style architecture.
Each Timber Build rafter tail is milled from solid Western Red Cedar in our Lilburn, Georgia workshop. What are rafter tails?
Rafter tails are the exposed ends of roof rafters visible under the eaves. Decorative cedar rafter tails are added beneath the overhang to give a home the look of authentic exposed-beam construction, even on homes with boxed or enclosed eaves.
Are rafter tails structural?
Decorative rafter tails are non-structural accents fastened under the existing eave. They mimic the appearance of structural rafter ends without carrying roof load.
How many rafter tails do I need?
Most installs repeat a rafter tail every 16 or 24 inches along the eave to match standard framing. Measure your total eave length and divide by your chosen spacing to get a count.
How are rafter tails installed?
Rafter tails are typically fastened to the fascia or sub-fascia with lag screws or structural screws, aligned to a consistent spacing. We offer matching lag screws and plugs for a clean, finished look.
What size should rafter tails be?
Choose a depth and projection in proportion to your overhang — deeper tails suit larger eaves. Standard profiles fit most homes, and we can scale any design to your exact dimensions.
