Wooden Knee Braces
Wood Knee Braces add timeless architectural character while reinforcing posts and beams in porches, entries, pergolas, and other exposed-timber builds. Handcrafted from premium Western Red Cedar, they bring warm grain, natural durability, and a clean, finished look to both residential and commercial projects. Choose from standard profiles or request a custom size to match your design.
Wooden knee braces add timber-frame character and visual support to porches, pergolas, gable ends, and entryways. Set at an angle between a post and a beam, a cedar knee brace creates the look of solid, handcrafted construction — the kind of detail that defines craftsman, farmhouse, and timber-frame homes.
Every Timber Build knee brace is milled from solid Western Red Cedar in our Lilburn, Georgia workshop. Cedar's natural resistance to moisture, decay, and insects makes it ideal for the exposed, outdoor spots where knee braces are most often installed. Browse our standard designs below, or call 1-800-915-5110 for a custom size. Coordinate your project with matching wood brackets and corbels.
Cedar Knee Brace FAQs
What is a knee brace used for?
A knee brace is an angled support that ties a vertical post to a horizontal beam, adding both visual weight and bracing to porches, pergolas, gables, and carports. Most decorative knee braces also provide genuine diagonal support against racking.
What angle do your knee braces come in?
Our standard braces are cut at a 45-degree angle, the most common for post-and-beam connections. We can also mill custom angles to match your specific framing — just send us your dimensions.
Are cedar knee braces structural?
Solid cedar braces add real diagonal stiffness, but whether a brace is load-rated depends on your framing and fasteners. For structural applications, anchor with proper lag screws into solid wood and consult your builder, or contact us for sizing.
What size knee brace should I choose?
Size your brace to the post and beam it connects — larger timbers call for longer, deeper braces for correct proportion. A common starting point runs 18 to 24 inches along each leg. We can scale any design to fit.
How do I attach a knee brace?
Knee braces typically mount with lag screws driven through the brace into the post and beam, often counter-bored and capped with wood plugs for a finished look. We offer matching lag screws and plugs.
Can I get a custom knee brace design?
Yes. Beyond our standard profiles, we build fully custom braces from your drawings or photos. Call 1-800-915-5110 or visit our custom work page.
