4x4 Western Red Cedar Timber – Surfaced Four Sides (S4S) – Engineered
Our Engineered 4x4 S4S finish features a clean, planed surface on all four sides of the timber, providing a straight and uniform profile with square edges. For projects that require enhanced stability, reduced warping, or longer spans, Engineered Western Red Cedar is an excellent choice. This is a basic, no-frills finish ideal for applications that demand a clean-cut appearance without the need for premium surface refinement. It is also well-suited for use in coastal environments when properly treated and installed with corrosion-resistant hardware.
Engineered Western Red Cedar S4S is well-suited for framing, structural components requiring added stability, or installations where the timber will be painted, concealed, or further processed on-site. It offers a balance between natural wood character and a consistent machined surface.
Size Note: The actual finished size of an Engineered 4x4 S4S timber is 3 7/16" x 3 7/16", with a manufacturing tolerance of ±1/16". This finish does not include sanding or edge easing—corners remain sharp and square, and some light milling marks may be visible.
Appearance Note: No wood filler or putty is applied, and no sanding or surface repair is performed. Natural color variation and minor imperfections are to be expected.
Engineered Western Red Cedar maintains the same dimensional profile and surface appearance as our solid Surfaced Four Sides finish timbers, while offering improved strength, stability, and consistency through a laminated construction process.
Custom Finish Option – Smooth Finish (By Quote)
For select products with S4S or S1S2E profiles, Timber Build offers an optional Smooth Finish upgrade—our signature custom preparation that enhances surface quality and makes each board stain- or paint-ready. This Smooth Finish is an exact match to the finish used on our standard Smooth Finish product line.
This premium finish includes detailed surface preparation beyond standard milling: we inspect and repair surface imperfections, apply wood putty where needed, and sand all exposed surfaces to a 100-grit smoothness. Edges remain square unless otherwise specified.
Ideal For: Projects that demand a refined appearance, such as exposed trim, wrapped columns, high-end exterior details, or interior installations where a clean, finished look is required.
