4x8 Douglas Fir Timber – Surfaced Four Sides (S4S) – #1 Structural, Kiln-Dried
Our 4x8 Douglas Fir Timber with a Surfaced Four Sides (S4S) finish is graded #1 Structural and kiln-dried for maximum strength, dimensional stability, and performance. The S4S finish provides a clean, planed surface on all four faces, resulting in a straight, uniform profile with sharp, square edges.
This finish is ideal for structural framing, beams, load-bearing supports, and general construction where strength, consistency, and a clean surface are required. It is also well-suited for applications where the timber will be concealed, painted, or further processed on-site.
Size Note: The nominal size is 4x8. The actual finished size is 3 1/2" x 7 1/2", with a manufacturing tolerance of ±1/16". This standard S4S finish does not include sanding or edge easing—corners remain sharp, and some milling marks may be visible.
Appearance Note: No wood filler, putty, or surface sanding is applied. Natural grain variation, knots, and minor imperfections consistent with #1 Structural grading may be present.

For select products with S4S or S1S2E profiles, Timber Build offers a custom Smooth Finish upgrade—our signature preparation that enhances surface quality and creates a stain- or paint-ready appearance. This Smooth Finish is an exact match to the surface used on our standard Smooth Finish product line.
This premium finish includes advanced surface preparation: all exposed faces are inspected and repaired, wood putty is applied as needed, and surfaces are sanded to a 100-grit smoothness. Edges remain square unless otherwise specified.
Ideal For: Projects requiring a refined appearance, such as exposed trim, wrapped columns, high-end exterior details, or interior installations where a clean, finished look is desired.
